Sofas help bring comfort and style to the living room, but they get more wear and tear than you might think. Whether you're eating dinner or watching a movie in the family room, sofas can trap body oils, cooking smells, and airborne dust and dirt.

With upholstered furniture, learning how to deep clean a couch can seem like an impossible challenge. Fortunately, we have a few tips and tricks to make sofa cleaning a breeze.

It's important to know the types of fabrics used in upholstery and what the codes mean before you start cleaning.

Label codes

W - this means it can be cleaned with water

WS - can be cleaned with dry cleaners or mild detergents and steam vacuums

X - No water, vacuum only

S - clean with dry cleaning agent

Basic tips

Please follow these three simple maintenance tips to help prolong the life of your sofa.

Dry brush - Use a dry brush to remove any fabric, dirt or debris.

Vacuum - On a lower setting, use the vacuum to suck out items that you can shake freely with the dry brush as well as items that have become deeply embedded in the sofa.

Replacing the cushions - Turn over the cushions to reduce the appearance of wear and tear.

Deep clean

Sometimes, regular maintenance does not deal with deeply embedded dirt and stains. To properly deep clean your sofa, you will need a cleaning cloth, a stiff brush, baking soda and a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. Follow the following steps to learn.

Test your fabric - Baking soda is useful for many things, including removing dirt and embedded stains from your sofa. Test the fabric in an inconspicuous area first, but baking soda is safe for most types of upholstery.

Brush sofas - Use a stiff brush to brush off crumbs, dust and other debris.

Apply baking soda - Sprinkle baking soda on the sofa and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes.

Vacuum the baking soda - Use the brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove the baking soda or mixture.

Clean the cushions

If you can remove the cushion covers and the label indicates that they are machine washable, then this is the easiest way to clean the sofa cushions. Otherwise, you can knock the cushions outside on a sunny day to loosen dirt and debris. One of the benefits of doing this is that the sun's ultraviolet rays disinfect the fabric.
